Our View

I started my career wanting to write for the most obvious reasons, I enjoy it and I'm good at it (or at least I'd like to think so). I didn't want to be a journalist so I pursued PR and the promise of being able to spend my days writing in different styles and on a range of topics - Of course you never end up doing quite what you think you will!

So I went from event planning to advertising to PR and beyond, writing all the way through - though not all the time - and over the years, I've found…

I just ate my second lunch of the day! This at once is the best and worst thing about working from home this past week. While the MAVERICK mansion undergoes it's magnificent renovation, I am located five feet from my fridge.

We hear a lot about the concept of work shifting and of whether the freedom to work offsite is a good thing. Let me offer some perspective on my  past week.

Earlier this year, my boss published this blog post amidst the fuss of Yahoo's clampdown on working from home. It…

What does it take to be a mother and work in an industry that demands as much from you as your kids? A lot. In celebration of Mother's Day on Sunday, I chatted with Julie, Natalia, Anne and Laurie, the hard-working MAVERICK mothers, to get their perspective on balancing motherhood and MAVERICKhood.

Elana: Being a mom is said to be the most challenging and rewarding job ever. The same is said about being a public relations practitioner. Which of the two do you find more challenging and why?

When you work in an industry as fast-paced as public relations, sometimes you don't have the luxury to, you know, leave the office long enough to grab some lunch!

Here at MAVERICK, we take lunch very, very seriously. So much so, that a couple of MAVERICKs decided to take matters into their own hands and start a company Lunch Club.

I sat down with the members of Lunch Club to discuss the club and why they think it's a valuable program to implement within a company:

I've been in PR for just under two years. It wasn't where I thought I'd end up. In fact, my journey started on the other side.

I was one of the lucky few. A few months after finishing my undergraduate degree, I interviewed for a research position at OMNI Television. The station had just been hired to produce a weekly Portuguese-language program for the international channel of Portugal's national broadcaster (RTP International), to profile the successes of Portuguese Canadians across the…

Public relations is a fast-paced, busy and unpredictable profession. No two days are alike, and it's hard to foresee what a week will bring, let alone plan ahead for it. When it comes to working in your personal life on top of that, it becomes a balancing act that requires skill and focus, but it's important to make it work.

It's true that these days, the work/life balance of days past is not quite the same. We're plugged in 24/7, connected in ways like never before and (given that my focus is…

There are two movies that I have watched on average about 100 times each and I am still enraptured by every second and frame of each film: the epic classic  The Godfather and the cult classic, Scarface.

Both star the genius Al Pacino and feature subject matter that isn't exactly family friendly.  And yes, I think these brilliant, albeit uber-violent gangster films can teach us all a few lessons about being an entrepreneur.  Here are my top four insights:

BIG PICTURE THINKING

Part of being a MAVERICK is spreading the knowledge (and the love!) around to the team to help us all work better, smarter and more efficiently. My colleague Natasha and I recently hosted a lunch and learn on the topic of time management - an important skill to master as a PR agency employee. When working with multiple clients, that each have multiple projects and deadlines, it's easy to get overwhelmed if we're not carefully managing our time.

Natasha and I are both devoted to our to-do lists…

After moving to Toronto two years ago,  I've had a  chance to fall in love with this great city. I moved here to pursue a career in PR. Growing up in a Colombian household meant there was always salsa, loads of fruits and only home cooked meals in the fridge ready to be enjoyed.

However I wish I had realized then that my move-out date from my mom's condo meant that I would be responsible for stocking my own fridge and pantry. I mean, how is this chica supposed to survive without mama around…

Building Canada’s Better Vibes – one good deed at a time

Unless you live under a rock or are completely oblivious to your surroundings, you've seen the colourful ads plastered across major cities in Canada encouraging people to be nicer to one another. These ads are the brain-child of Zak Mroueh, president & creative director at Zulu Alpha Kilo, and Mark Sherman, chairman at Media Experts, who founded the social movement, People for Good.

Well, you could have knocked me over with a feather. Nice to hear that someone as sociable as you suffers from the same fears as a wallflower like me!

Hey.  How come nobody has taken on this question??   I came across it tonight.  Hi, Julie.  I love telling people what to wear.  My friends take me shopping so I can tell 'em what's what.
A great example of business casual is, say, a tuxedo jacket,…
